Inviting Calmness & Clarity

2 1/2 minute read

When there’s chaos in the world, our best respose is to keep it outside of us. This doesn’t mean we ignore the chaos; It means we don’t let it drag us down, suck us in, or make us turn to ‘false friends’ to cope with the anxiety of it.

I invite you to embrace two powerful practices that offer nearly infinite benefits and are very effective for bringing both calm and clarity to our lives: They are daily stillness and movement.

Stillness

Most people I know rush thru their days going from one task to another from waking to bedtime. As a ‘type A’, I can certainly relate to this. My husband jokes that I have two modes: Doing or sleeping. While mostly true, I make time as a part of my morning routine to get grounded and be still. Call it meditation or in my case, these 12 minutes are simply to get quiet, try to settle my monkey mind and connect to the calmness of my breath.

On the rare days I miss my 12 minutes of quiet, I’m much more reactive and feel more rushed—- it can feel like swimming in muddied water. The difference is so noticeable, I make time for sitting a daily ritual. After more than 10 years of this practice, I still consider myself a novice, but I show up on the regular to do it anyway.

Movement

On the opposite side of the getting stillness is movement.

When we get out of our heads and into our bodies and make exercise a daily ritual, it has a tremendous impact on how we feel and if we age with vitality or grow older with disease.

There were years when I struggled to make exercise a part of my lifestyle—-excuses or reasons to skip a workout easily popped up. It wasn’t until I made movement a part of my morning grounding routine that it really stuck. Now, the question is never ‘should I exercise today?’. Instead, it’s only a question of what I’ll do.

When life has other plans for me (illness, injury, major crisis of some kind) and I’m kept from this powerful daily ritual, I feel lower energy and much less grounded. I hear this from my coaching clients as well who have learned the power of embracing daily movement as a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. (DM me for my tip sheet to get and stay physically active.)

Remember these two truisms

  1. The things we do daily are much easier to instill as habits vs. any other type of schedule.

  2. Our habits are what make (or break) our health over our lifetimes.
